Small Classes, Individualized Courses

We have a maximum of 21 pupil in all secondary classes, but most teaching takes place individually or in small groups of up to 12 students.  This ensures courses can be adapted to the needs of individual children who know and are known by teachers.  Our small school allows a felixibility in course choice and management that is beyond the scope of larger schools with their rigid timetabling  and large classes.

All subjects are taught by gifted specialist teachers (nothing by correpsondence).  These teachers bring special opportunities for children to develop real competence and to try new subjects.

With more than one age group in each class, role models cross age boundaries: peer pressure is minimised.  In large seondary schools peer groups dominate and there is little natural mixing between age groups ~ in this small school all age divisions are minimised.

All teaching takes place in attractive, modern clasrooms designed to support our innovative curriclum.  Computers and resources are located in all classrooms where students can access them as they need them for their lessons.

Beginning Specialisation & Independent Study

Our commitment to a structured, progressive, content-rich approach to teaching ensures that in these critical Junior Secondary years children consolidate a foundaiton of knowledge and skill in the core curriculum while extending their experience in dynamic and varied opportunities for creativity and learning.

All courses are structured around modules of five weeks that integrate our Carey College Christian curriculum with the Cambridge International Curriculum.  Students work at their own level in each subject, learning good work habits and responsibility for time management.

All students take courses in the Core Subjects of Bible, English, History, Geography & Government, Science, Mathematics, Physical Care, Art, Music, IT/Computer Studies (including Cambridge ICT Starters), and Technology.  In addition,  Vocational, Life Skills and Extension options can be chosen from the full range of Carey College and Cambridge subjects, either as complete courses or as "taster" short course that introduce students to subjects they may be intersted in sampling before making Senior College commitments.

Our 14+ Enrichment Programme offers challenges in Skills, Service, Sport and Expeditions leading to the Young New Zealanders Challenge (Duke of Edinburgh) Awards.
Working With Parents

We believe our role is to help parents, not take over from them.  That means we keep parents fully informed about their children's schooling, and are open to parents' insights and advice.  To ensure the best possible communication:
Parents are directly involved in constructing each child's course
Children plan course modules for each subject, and record weekly progress, in a log book (their "Course Record") which parents monitor and sign-off on weekly, and which provides space for feedback between home and school
Regular tests (weekly in some subjects) are used to monitor children's learning, with a formal assessment being completed at the end of each module in each subject.  All results are recorded in student's Course Records so that parents can be informed of progress, and marked tests are made available to parents
When Cambridge Tests are given, parents receive the same data teachers receive: a definitive mark and, when available, an analytical report on their child's knowledge and skill
All class work is available to be shared with parents, with a roster that ensure you see every exercise book at least once a term
Written reports based on objctive evaluation of learning and progress are issed twice a year.  Also twice a year each pupil meets with his/her parents and class teacher to review progress and plan the next stage of learning
Parents are always welcome in the school (by appointment please if you need to talk to a staff member)
Our small classes, flexible courses, and biblically shaped school life enable us to fulfil our commitment to helping you nurture your children in excellence and truth for Christ.
A core course and specialist options prepare students for advanced secondary schooling or vocational options according to individual gifts and calling.
