Term 4 2012
Posted 04-10-2012

Term 4 Begins 8 October School begins again Monday 8 October after a 2 week break.  (This is a week earlier than most state schools.)

Why are Carey College Terms different form state school terms?  Our school year has always been based around 4 terms of 10 weeks each as an aid to effective teaching.  When we started, most schools had only 3 terms a year, and they could be up to 16 weeks long.  That is too long.  10 weeks works well and eventually state schools adopted a similar concept - with variations.  In 2013 the state schools will have up to 12 weeks in Term 1, only 9 weeks in Term 3, and 10 weeks in each of Terms 2 & 4.  Not only does that defy logic, if we were to conform it would mess with the way our curriculum is taught.  We align our terms of 10 weeks as closely as possible with state school terms.  In 2013 we start after some state schools and before others; Terms 1 & 2 end a week earlier than state schools, but Terms 3 & 4 end on the same week as state schools.

Carey College Science Fair 11 October Our annual Science fair is a feature of the school life, with a tradition of excellence in presentation of practical science investigations at local national and international levels.  This year's projects have been integrated into the CREST Science Awards - projects will be on display from 7:00 pm with presentation of awards at 7:30 pm.  Parents and friends are welcome to join students and staff for this special evening.

Cambridge International Examinations Begin 16 October This year over 50 different examinations are being sat for IGCSE, AS and A Levels.  Candidates have their timetables.  For most of our Year 11 - 13 students these are their final examinations for the year.

Labour Day Holiday 22 October

School Assembly 1 November We hold a school assembly on the first Thursday of each month (when it falls on a school day).  At each assembly we present awards earned over the previous month, students present performance-items, and we look at an aspect of the year’s theme (in 2012 it is the wonder of God’s creation and providence).  Parents are welcome.

Open Day 1 November This is our first Open Day - we are planning to have one each term.  We welcome visits at any time from parents and children considering enrolling, but we are aware some parents and children find it easier to visit on a designated day.  On our Open Days we will have someone available to talk to parents and children and show them around the school between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm.

Cambridge Progression Tests begin 12 November. The Cambridge Year 6-9 Progression Tests are used selectively at the end of the school year to assess students' progress, strengths and needs, and to guide future teaching.

Solar Eclipse 14 November.  Weather permitting, we should be able to observe a significant partial solar eclipse through the morning of Wednesday 14 November.  Students will have training in using the special eye-protecting filters we have for sun observations, and their observations will be closely supervised.  No one should look directly at the sun without certified protection, even when the eclipse is at its maximum.  Such things as sun glasses are not safe for looking directly at the sun: permanent blindness can result from unsafe viewing.

Carey College Grade 11 -13 Bible Exam
Year 11 - 13 students who are sitting Cambridge exams have a special sitting of their Carey College Bible exam during the long CIE exam session.  The date for this will be announced before the term starts.

Years 7 - 13 Carey College Exams begin 26 November  End of Year examinations are one of the assessment tools we use to assess not only student progress but also the effectiveness of our teaching.  Students in years 7 & 8 sit one hour examinations in each core subject, not only for assessment but to introduce them to examinations.  Year 9 & 10 students sit 2 hour papers in each subject, while year 11 - 13 exams are normally of 3 hours each.  Students are issued with timetables.

Independent Christian Schools Fellowship Principals Meet 4 December at Pacific Christian School. Carey College is a foundation member of this growing fellowship of Christian Schools that remain independent of the state system.  Principals meet once a term to share insights and information, and to encourage faithfulness in our challenging ministries.  We also hold a conference once a year to encourage schools and teachers to continue to develop biblical teaching.

Assembly 6 December

Secondary Classes End 7 December This is the end of the academic year for years 9 - 13, but students are required to attend the Final Assembly the following week.  Year 9-13 students leave school at mid-day.

[find it on Google Maps]

International Student 2013 Tuition and Welfare Fees 14 December
